Common Causes Of Blocked Drains

Jan 24, 2023

A blocked drain is a plumbing issue where the normal flow of water through a pipe or drainage system is obstructed or restricted. The consequences of this can cause significant disruption to your home life, including strong odours, slow draining water, water damage, health hazards and unpleasant living conditions, so it’s vital to identify problems quickly when they occur.

This blog outlines common causes of drain blockage, preventative measures you can take and services we offer to resolve problems to get your water running freely again.

Debris Build-up

Perhaps the most common reason behind a blocked drain is build-up of debris, such as hair, paper towels, wipes, sanitary products and other bulky items. Blocked drains can occur in various places including sinks, toilets, showers and bathtubs, so it’s important to be conscious of what you’re flushing or washing down the drain. Bends in the drainage pipes can also be the cause of collected debris which can result in blockages. To prevent debris build-up, regularly clean your drains using a drain snake or plunger. It’s also a good idea to install a hair catcher in showers and bathtubs to stop hair from going down the drain in the first place.

Fats, Grease & Oil

When fats, grease and oil are poured down the drain, they can solidify and create a blockage in the pipes. To prevent this, avoid pouring these substances down the drain and instead dispose of them in a sealed container. Using a grease-cutting cleaner on a regular basis can also help to break down any build-up that may have occurred.

Food Scraps

Larger chunks of food can also contribute to blocked drains; this can be easily prevented by properly disposing of scraps and leftovers. Use a garbage disposal to help to break down food scraps to stop them from becoming lodged in the pipes, or simply throw away larger pieces of food in a rubbish or compost bin.

Tree Roots Growing Into Pipes

Tree roots are attracted to the moisture and nutrients found in the pipes and can quickly infiltrate the drainage system through small openings or cracks. As the tree roots continue to grow, they expand and widen these holes which can lead to a complete blockage of the pipe. Roots can also wrap around pipes and cause them to crack or break, resulting in a blockage. Regular maintenance and inspections can detect potential issues, such as cracks or holes in the pipes, and address them before they become major problems.

Corrosion

Corrosion can cause significant damage to pipes and drainage systems, leading to leaks, blockages and even complete failure of the system. You can prevent corrosion by monitoring water pH levels, using corrosion inhibitors, regularly inspecting your pipes and properly maintaining and cleaning the drainage system.
